Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon has issued directives for strictly implementation of the home department’s motorcycle pillion-riding ban, telling the cops not to ride on motorcycles as pillion passengers themselves.
Officials said on Sunday that the additional inspector general of police directed his subordinates to ensure the cops themselves did not resort to pillion riding while commuting from their homes to office or during motorcycle patrolling.
Police personnel having no conveyance of their own have been told to utilise the free shuttle service from Monday along the routes and timings mentioned below:
Route 1: At 6am, a Daewoo Bus of the PHQ East will proceed from Drigh Road to Gulshan-e-Hadeed Sindhoo Chowk via Sharea Faisal and the National Highway. At 7 and 7:30am, this bus will move from Gulshan-e-Hadeed to Drigh Road. At 1500 and 1530 hours, the bus will move from Drigh Road to Gulshan-e- Hadeed.
Route 2: At 6am, a bus of the Special Security Unit (SSU) will move from the Landhi Police Station to the Gulshan-e- Iqbal Police Station via Korangi Crossing, Qayyumabad, Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway, Sharea Faisal, Karsaz, Hasan Square and NIPA. At 7am and 7:30am, this bus will move from the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police Station to the Landhi Police Station via same route. At 1500 and 1530 hours, this bus will move from the Landhi Police Station to the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police Station on the same route.
Route 3: At 6am, a bus will move from the Police Headquarters South, Garden, towards Central District via Garden, Nishtar Road and Lasbela, and will enter Central District. At 7am and 7:30am, this bus will move from District Central towards the PHQ South, Garden, via the same route. At 1500 and 1530, this bus will move from the PHQ South, Garden, towards the Central District on the same route.
Route 4: In District Central, a bus will pass through Khawaja Ajmir, 4k Chowrangi, Old PS Surjani back to Power House, Nagan Chowrangi, Sakhi Hassan, Five Star, KDA Chowrangi, Board Office, Nazimabad, Golimar Chowrangi, Liaquatabad Dhakana, Liaquatabad 10 No, Ayesha Manzil, Water Pump and Sohrab Goth.
Route 5: In District West, a bus will operate in Pak Bazaar, Disco Mor, Dua Chowk, ZMC West, Orangi No-5, Banaras Bridge, Abdullah College, Board Office, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad.10, toward Sharea Pakistan.
Route 6: A bus will move from Quaidabad to the Central Police Office via Sharea Faisal at 7am and will return at 1700.
Talking to The News, Additional IGP Memon said the Karachi Range police had strictly implemented the home department’s directives, registered cases against violators, and warned the citizens of action.
Sharing details, he said the South Range police checked 1,103 motorcycles, lodged 34 FIRs, arrested 72 people, and warned 1,071 people against violating the orders again.
The East Range Police checked 1,189 motorcycles, lodged 17 FIRs, arrested 39 and warned 1,148 people, while the West Range police checked 992 motorcycles, registered six FIRs, arrested 13 and warned 986 people.
Memon added that the Karachi Traffic Police had fined 1,403 citizens for violating the pillion-riding ban, while three policemen were also fined for the violation of the ban.
